Lithium batteries are one of the most used batteries. It is used in every wearable devices, like watches, smartphones, remote car locks, laser pointer MP3 players, calculator, Battery back up systems in computers, etc. so for that, it should be flexible and easy to fit.

So scientists have developed a thin, highly flexible textile lithium battery. This battery can safely power wearable electronics used in healthcare monitoring, clothes and the internet of things. This textile lithium battery is lightweight. Hong Kong Polytechnic University researchers have developed this. This battery has high energy density and excellent flexibility, which is the need for these devices

About this Flexible Battery

Researchers had an aim to provide flexibility in the devices, so for that, the battery has to be thin. So the battery is less than 0.5 mm thick. It has capabilities like fast charging/discharging. This battery also has a long life compared with conventional lithium batteries. Due to its long cycle life, this Lithium battery is currently the dominant rechargeable battery in the market, because it has high energy density and long cycle life.

Efforts by scientists

If it is about the conventional heavy lithium battery, it is hard to use in wearable devices, over the past decade. The scientist has taken so much of effort in developing a bendable lithium battery. So they use these batteries as current collector. 
Researchers said that the Lithium Battery overcomes the bottlenecks of energy density, flexibility, mechanical robustness, and cycling stability.

“As all wearable electronics will require wearable energy supply, our novel technology in fabricating Textile Lithium battery offers a promising solution to a wide array of next-generation application, ranging from healthcare, infotainment, sports, aerospace, fashion, IoT to any sensing or tracking uses that may even exceed our imagination of today”

The material used for Battery

To create such a kind of battery. The researchers have to put relevant materials. So researchers deposited highly conductive metal, copper and nickel uniformly onto pre-treated fabrics. Such fabricated metallic fabrics, featuring low sheet resistance and large surface area, serve as current collectors in the battery.

They added active materials to act as cathode and anode, metallic fabrics, together with separator and electrolyte. They assembles into the Textile Lithium Battery.

Tests results of Battery

The team conducted some laboratory tests showed that the extremely high mechanical stability, durability, and safety of the textile lithium battery under deformation. They also repeatedly folded in half, twisted at different angles of freely crumpled, but the voltage window remained the same.
The bending test showed that the Lithium Battery can be bent over 1,000 times with marginal capacity degradation. They conducted safety tests, by hammering, trimming with scissors and penetrating with a nail. This proved the battery can stably provide power output for the electronic components. So there is no risk of catching fire or burst.

So this is how these devices are getting power.
