Agni 5 : India’s first ICBM Heading Towards Success

The DRDO is all set to handover Agni 5 to Strategic Forces Command (SFC) soon. The long range ballistic missile was recently test fired. It lift off from Odisha on June 3 this year.  The missile comes under the original Integrated Guided Missile Development Program. This missile is the most sophisticated weapon. Some defence experts suggested that they are testing the missile several times to check its durability.

The Agni 5 missile is definitely a military prowess. It is a big threat to enemies because of its range. The missile is capable of targeting the primary cities of China and parts of Europe and Africa as well. The system has a strike range of more than 5,000 km. Also, only few countries in the world (including  US, Russia, North Korea, China and France)  have intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM). And now India is one of them.

Currently, India has Agni 1 with 700 km range, Agni 2 with 2,000 km range, Agni 3 and Agni 4 with 2,500 km to 3,500 km range. Previously,the Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO) had five successful test fires. Therefore, the latest flight was the sixth test. The first two flights of Agni 5 were at open configuration in 2012 and 2013 respectively.

The next two flights were from canister integrated with a mobile launcher. The last flight was also launched with the help of mobile launcher. The DRDO test fired Agni 5 succesfully for the sixth time in a row.

An official who is the part of this mission, said that this is a strategic asset which will act as a deterrent. He also added that this is the most advanced weapon in its series. It has some latest technologies for navigation and the missile can carry nuclear warhead efficiently.

Furthermore, Agni 5 is almost over 50 tonne. Consequently, it is capable of containing 1.5 tonne of nuclear warhead. Due to the fact that it’s a canister launch missile. It ensures high reliability, costs low maintenance. This kind of launch also  reduce the amount of time to prepare for a missile.

India is growing its military powers at a very rapid pace. Along with the this, BrahMos supersonic cruise missile is also a high-end topic. As a result, we have the fifth largest military budget in the world. India seems to become world’s biggest arms importer with these massive projects.
