As soon as the first rays of the sunlight hit your blinds and they open, waking you up in the process. You walk into the washroom and use your Oral B smart series toothbrush to brush your teeth. For a nice shower, you enter your bath tub and the water adjusts itself to the room temperature. After a shower, you’re ready to get dressed. The cupboard opens itself to show your wardrobe. You pick your outfit for the day. When you’re about to get your coffee, you realize your coffee is over. Using your replenishment dash button, you get your coffee beans and quickly get ready to reach your office.

The morning that I have described here is that of a house that is influenced by Smart devices. Smart devices can be referred to a set of devices that do your day to day work more efficiently with a given set of inputs through wireless connectivity like Bluetooth and Wi-Fi. These include devices like smart locks, smart toothbrushes, smart watches, automation, etc. This may not include artificial intelligence. In fact, Artificial Intelligence is a lot more different than Smart devices. Artificial intelligence refers to mimicking of human intelligence and using neural networks to make humane decisions. Some may refer using smart devices as weak artificial intelligence too.
Smart devices require human inputs into machines to work to their orders whereas artificial intelligence analyses the situation and act accordingly(more like a response to repeated stimuli). Robots can create their own functional language (as happened with Facebook) or learn human emotions after repeatedly using Skype. This can be useful and harmful in many ways. Facebook’s AI created an entirely different functional language that even the programmers could not understand. There have been cases where the robots have become increasingly competitive and deceiving to other robots in competitive tasks.

Vladimir Putin quoted “Whoever leads in AI will rule the world”. This to some extent can be right since we are investing the only the power we have in machines, the power that distinguishes us from the other beings. We are investing in them the power to overtake us as a superior being. Smart devices/computers are still under our control. They do not have the knowledge to work on their own yet help us in most of the day to day chores and even programming. The use of smart devices is always highly recommended since it is more ethical and professional. As stated by Elon Musk, AI has the potential to wipe out an entire industry just because they are “smarter” than their human counterparts.

Artificial intelligence has had his breakthrough in medicine by assisting doctors. Last year, Microsoft had announced their project on developing a machine named Hanover which would suggest the doctors on the right treatment for various cancers by memorizing all the papers related to cancer and suggesting the right combination of drugs for the patients. In this, AI would do the work precisely and with accuracy. Dr. Nichola J. Millard of BT group said, “Things like creativity, empathy, negotiation, innovation, intuition, and emotion are not (at the moment) things that technology can cope with very well. A good human brain plus AI can superpower businesses”. BT group has been researching on how AI would be beneficial in deploying scheduling application that provides the work schedules of 20,000 engineers. Usage of Smart devices limits that creativity. In fact, it just ends up being a helping tool and not a device which would bring out the full potential of human intellectual. Another threat in smart devices is that it can be hacked.

There’s a lot of speculation regarding AI and smart devices but only the coming time would tell us whether the future of AI is a boon or curse. For all the latest trends, tech news, reviews & new technologies follow us on Instagram, TwitterFacebook.
