IIT is Planning to Tackle Dementia

IIT is planning to tackle memory loss in people. Scientist from IIT Gandhinagar have developed a technology. So This technology can non invasively diagnose dementia. And Scientist are going to track eye movements. It is much before the symptoms appears. Now the neurodegenerative disorders are becoming a serious health issue. While dementia can not be cured.  We can delay it’s progression by early diagnose.

Dementia is a broad category of brain diseases. And this cause effects on ability of thinking. And It is enough to effect on person’s daily functioning. Symptoms are emotional problems , difficulties in language and a decrease in motivation. A person’s consciousness Is usually not affected. A dementia has a requirement of change from person’s usual mental functioning. And a greater decline Than one would expect due to aging. These diseases also have a significant effect on a person’s caregivers. So It decreases ability to think. They have Emotional problems. Also It has problem with languages. And there is another problem that it decreases motivation. It causes Alzheimer’s disease. Also causes vascular dementia, lewy body dementia and frontotemporal dementia.

Basic preventions

We should get early education. So All we have to prevent high blood pressure and We should prevent obesity. Also prevent smoking. We also should do exercise. Social connect should be strong. For this disease treatment is supportive care. We should also do meditation. So Frequency of the patients is about 46 millions in 2015 and deaths are 1.9 million in 2015.

IITians have found a Technology

IIT Gandhinagar scientists have developed a technology for dementia. This technology can non invasively diagnose dementia by tracking person’s eye movements. Neurodegenerative disorders are becoming a serious health issue. While dementia can not be cured it can be delayed by diagnosed early. Scientist have developed a ‘MindEye’ project. It can track the person’s eye movements. Quantifying gaze in terms of reaction time and correct fixations. In response to visua stimuli presented on computer monitor. Scientists can then map the eye movements. On the analysis of response to the stimulus. They can identify subtle patterns that predict whether the person suffers from mild cognitive impairment.

Lahiri Said,

We are preparing a stimulus. Dots appearing at certain portions of the screen and at certain angle. People with dementia often have issues of following dot or fixing their gaze. There were 10 healthy participants in preliminary results of experimental study. We have handed this technology over to inindustry. And a larger clinical trail is under way in Kolkata and Gujrat. About 1600 people have screened already.

Researcher at their best

The researchers used standard tests. Long questionnaires that a patient answers with the help of psychiatrist to validate their results. The results were presented in this month at the faculty of old age psychiatry annual conference held in UK. There are several methods. It has some shortcomings. During research ,researchers found uneducated people in old age homes have difficulties in answering questionnaires. Which is making it harder to give a correct diagnoses. So this is where our system can take over diagnose dementia. There is no screening tool yet that can detect dementia in such objective terms.
