JioPhone Announced Effectively for Free – Features, Availability, Plans: Everything you should know!

Reliance Jio announced the JioPhone today at its 40th AGM meeting held in Mumbai, India. Since past few weeks, there were several hoaxes and news that the phone will come at Rs. 500  or Rs. 1000 and lot more. Also, yesterday a JioPhone box got leaked with the MRP of Rs.2369. But today it is officially announced that the JioPhone will be available for free but buyers will have to deposit a fee of Rs 1500 which will be refundable after three years on returning the Jiophone back. This means the phone will be available at an effective price of  Rs. 0 for the buyers.

The phone will be made in India and to be the most intelligent, affordable phone in the world – a 4G LTE feature phone supporting all 24 Indian languages” – India ka smartphone dubbed JioPhone. Now Let’s talk about the features of the phone specifications, plans, price, and availability.

JioPhone’s features & Specifications:

  • The first ever feature phone from Jio.
  • It comes with 2.4-inch QVGA display
  • Adorned by an alphanumeric T9 keypad below the display.
  • It supports 4G LTE and apparently, it is a Jio-only phone.
  • You can only use a Jio SIM with the JioPhone.
  • It comes with voice recognition that can make calls, send messages and play movies or shows.
  • The phone includes a microSD card slot, camera, headphone jack, Torchlight and FM Radio.
  • The JioPhone will also support Digital Payments.
  • The phone will get more features like Tap and Pay support via NFC
  • Support for linking Bank account, Jan Dhan account, UPI account and Debit/Credit cards etc.
  • Sounds something like Samsung Pay.
  • It will be added via an automatic software upgrade in the future.

Pricing and Availability:

Jio already has 125 million users since its launch in September last year.  Now when it comes to Jio phone the company is looking to bring 5 million phones to the market every week from the month of September. As the JioPhone is effectively free. All Reliance Jio customers can pre-book this 4G LTE feature phone just by paying Rs. 1500 at the time of purchase though, but it is a fully refundable deposit that can be claimed after 3 years by returning the phone to Jio.

The ‘friendly trials’ of the phone start on August 15th, coinciding with the 70th Indian Independence Day. Existing Jio customers can pre-book their unit starting on August 24th using the MyJio app, their website or by visiting a Jio retail stores.

JioPhone Rs. 153 Plan Details:

Reliance Jio also announced a new plan for its first ever feature phone. Jio customers can subscribe to the Rs. 153 plan that offers All Unlimited – Data, Voice, SMS and Jio apps access that means they can avail the Jio Dhan Dhana Dhan offer at just Rs 153 per month. Under this, they will get free voice and SMS as well as unlimited data.

At the announcement, Reliance Jio revealed that voice will always be free, in line with all other offerings from the company. The plan comes with unlimited data as well, but the daily limit has been fixed at 0.5GB. As there is no Hotspot feature it is sufficient for a feature phone. SMSs will also be fixed at 100 messages per day, just due to TRAI’s limit.

Jio has also announced two recharge packs – one costing Rs 54 that offers a week’s validity while another comes with a validity of two days and is priced at Rs 24.

With over 125 million users, its market share will see huge surge once the JioPhone is made available in the market. According to the Jio, its 4G network coverage will be more than 2G coverage of the other networks in the next one year.
