Ever felt like your phone had less memory? With a 16GB or 32GB phone, you might. With a 64GB phone, probably a little. But with a 128GB or 256GB phone, both widely available options today, definitely not. Yet, Smartisan has unveiled its latest flagship, the Smartisan R1, with 1TB worth of storage.
In my personal experience, thats a bit excessive – a mobile phone doesn’t really need so much space and you’re going to end up paying for gigabytes you wont use. Smartisan, however, begs to differ, proudly stating that their phone breaks world records – that probably won’t be broken any time soon. Furthermore, memory isn’t everything. Lets see how the rest of the Smartisan R1 compares.
Smartisan R1 Design
The look of the Smartisan R1 is actually quite nice. Smartisan has gone with the trend of edge-to-edge displays but still stand out by not having notches on the screen. Following the design of the Essential PH-1, the Smartisan R1 display practically reaches the top, save for a small cut-out for the front-facing camera and a slit for the earpiece. The bottom has a moderately sized bezel, giving the Smartisan R1 an 84% screen-to-body ratio.
The rear of the phone is covered in 3D glass and the Grade 7 Aluminium frame is styled with a fine line that goes around it. The fingerprint sensor sits neatly beneath the Smartisan logo on the back and the volume rocker and lock buttons are circular.
Smartisan R1 Specs
Now, this phone’s star feature is it’s record breaking 1 terabyte worth of internal storage. The rest of the spec-sheet, though, is pretty impressive too. It has a 6.17 inch pressure sensitive display with a 2242 x 1080 resolution and 18.7:9 aspect ratio. It is covered with Gorilla Glass 3, has a 1500:1 contrast ratio, and a 96% color gamut (DCI-P3).
Under the hood is a Snapdragon 845 processor clocked at 2.8GHz, paired with an Adreno 630 GPU. It comes in four variants:
- 6GB RAM + 64GB storage
- 6GB RAM + 128GB storage
- 8GB RAM + 128GB storage
- 8GB RAM + 1TB storage
The Smartisan R1 also has dual rear camera. The primary sensor is a 12MP Sony IMX363 sensor with f/1.8 aperture, 1.4μm pixel size, 4-axis OIS and dual PD extreme focus. The second is a 20MP Sony IMX350 with a f/1.75 aperture, 1μm pizel size and 6P lens.
The front camera is a 24MP sensor with a f/2.0 aperture ArcSoft ray algorithm and AI real-time beauty mode.
The R1 has support for Bluetooth 5.0, dual-band Wi-Fi, NFC+eSE and a USB-C port with Display Port 1.4. It also has dual SIM support (nano only) and global LTE band support. The Smartisan R1 joins a very short list of devices supporting Quick Charge 4+. That means you should be able to charge its 3600mAh battery, lightning fast. It also support Power Delivery 3.0 and 10W wireless charging. Unfortunately, it doesn’t have an IP rating and lacks an audio jack.
