All we set alarms to wake up early or for some reason. But mostly we ignore it, also alarm bell should be that loud. That we will not ignore it. But this was about normal alarms which have only purpose to realize about the important events or to wake up. Apart from this, there are some alarms that have the purpose of safety. Yes, we call it Smoke Alarm.

Smoke alarms are painfully loud, which they are supposed to be. So nobody can ignore them. So many people, especially kids will sleep through alarms screeching noise. When the smoke is caused by fire and if you are sleeping, it will be deadly. That`s why researchers at Nationwide Children`s Hospital in Columbus, Ohio, were testing new types of alarms that few kids sleep through. These kids using their Mother`s voice.

Using the mother`s voice as an Alarms

Kids who heard their mother`s voice in an alarm woke up around two seconds. Then it took them only 20 seconds more to take a pre-arranged escape route. As per experiment, those who heard the standard smoke alarm often took two minutes to wake and nearly five minutes to escape. Researchers said that, In real life fire, that extra time could alarm spell the difference between life and death.

Researchers said

As per Mark Splaingard sleep is a uniquely vulnerable time. Mostly these fire deaths occur during the night. So we should know which alarms work best can saves lives. He is a doctor who took part in the new research.
One night in 1998, Splaingard treated three kids with severe burns. He was confused because their house had a functioning alarm. But the problem was that it hadn’t woken the kids up. So within a few years, Splaingard began the research to solve the problem.

About his research

When he was searching about, first he thought about the sounds kids might respond to most. So he got two possibilities one was their name and another was their mother`s voice. People pick out their own names more easily than other sounds. As per other research newborns, only a day or two old can recognize their mother`s voice.
Then in 2006, Splaingard`s team did a small study of 24 kids. Then the researchers found some evidence that both a mother`s voice and the use of the first name mattered in waking kids up. But that was not enough evidence to change practices. So researchers conducted another study.

Another study on children or kids

So this time the team tested 176 children. They were between the age of 5 and 12 at a sleep research center. This study was to make sure they could hear well. This experiment was so safe that before the kids went to sleep, they were taught an escape route to follow. Once the children have fallen into a deep sleep, researchers started that smoke alarm. So the researchers noted how long it took kids to wake up. They also noted how long they needed to follow the escape route.

For kids alarms just don’t awaken all of them, says Splaingard. As per his team data show there can be a true risk in depending on a high pitched alarm to wake sleeping kids. So Splaingards said that “We still don’t understand the reason why kids sleep through alarms and adults don’t”.
